In Many Startup Founders Doubt the Extent of Sexual Harassment, by Erin Griffith, Griffith uses a forthright and critical tone. The discussion of the results of a survey taken by Silicon Valley founders showed the forthright tone as Griffith explained the results, and how these results differed between men and women. The critical tone is shown with the discussion of the opinions on why there is a lack of diversity, specifically gender diversity, in Silicon Valley. As Griffith explains that only 17 percent of survey takers had a formal plan to promote diversity in the workplace. Griffith uses an emotional and logical appeal. The logical appeal is shown in her evidence, a survey from First Round Capital. Her emotional appeal is the nature of the topic, sexual harassment and lack of diversity in Silicon Valley. The purpose of this is to show that as it has grown larger and larger, Silicon Valley has produced numerous problems in their own workforce. Her argument is organized by first talking about how many sexual harassment allegations have come about this year, starting with Uber. Then it goes on to survey and within the survey it first talks about how many founders have seen sexual harassment, how they feel about the way the media shows, what they believe causes the lack of women in Silicon Valley, and finally what their company is doing to fix this. The part about why there is less women in Silicon Valley, while it was used to move on to the founders' plans to promote diversity, felt out of place, as the rest of the article was about sexual harassment specifically.

In Lunar Scientists Want to Hitch a Ride on America’s Next Moonshot, by Eric Niiler, a matter-of-fact and optimistic tone is used. The discussion of the possibilities that can come from going back to the Moon as well as the focus of what can be accomplished rather than the geopolitical side of it, shows the optimistic tone. He uses a logical appeal in his discussions of what scientists believe could come of it, and he appeals to emotions when looking at the geopolitical side of moon landings. The logical appeal is for people interested in what we could find out about the moon and the solar system from these moon landings.The emotional appeal is for people interested in NASA’s opinions on other countries doing the same thing, as well as NASA employees or former employees who worked there during the very geopolitical first moon landing. The purpose of this is to discuss the possibilities of what we could discover on other parts of the moon that the original teams from the Cold War didn’t go to. Their argument is organized by first talking about how Mike Pence said that we will go back to the moon someday and scientists’ excitement over this. Then different commercial space shuttle manufacturers and their recently approved moon landing permits were talked about, as well as some scientists’ plans for what they want to study on the moon. The final thing talked about was the geopolitics that could arise from going back to the moon. The mention of Mike Pence, while an acceptable opening, seemed unnecessary and like a tangent.

Why Men Don't Believe the Gender Bias on Science by Alison Coil is an interesting article that utilizes a forthright and judgmental tone. The tone sets a mood where the trend of women in science being treated as inferior to their male counterparts has been seen time and time again yet men in science refuse to believe it. The author sounds like they know this topic very well and may have had this happen to them. For the forthright tone, Coil talks about studies and are very frank about how women are treated worse than men in the realm of science. For the judgmental tone, it really comes through when Coil talks about why they believe men do not believe that women are treated like they’re less than men:”because they are scientists that they do not want to believe these studies. Scientists are supposed to be objective…scientists are people, subject to the same cultural norms and beliefs as the rest of society.”. This shows the judgmental tone because Coil is critical of the reasons men don’t believe the data and why they should believe it. Coil uses logic by showing various studies that prove that there is a gender bias among scientists. The purpose of this article is to show men that they are incorrect and female scientists are considered to be less than their male counterparts.
